A one-day symposium exploring development and the future of Harlem, the relationship between government policy and private initiatives, and the ability for Harlem's cultural heritage and legacy to withstand gentrification.

Visions of the future of Harlem and the question of gentrification and displacement are explored by speakers including: Yasmin Cornelius, District Manager, Community Board 10; Jordi Reyes-Montblanc, Chair, Community Board 9; and Nellie Hester Bailey, Prisident, Harlem Tenants Council.

Cultural tensions in the Harlem community are discussed by award-winning filmmaker Shawn Batey, producer, director and writer of documentary films and videos. Excerpts of her newest film, Changing Face of Harlem are presented. Arlene Davila, professor of Anthropology at New York University and author of Barrio Dreams: Puerto Ricans, Latinos and the Neoliberal City; and Irvine MacManus, Cultural Consultant and Trustee of the El Museo Del Barrio also speak.

John A. Elliott, Dean of Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business introduces keynote speaker C. Virginia Fields, former President of the Borough of Manhattan in celebration of her accomplishments. C. Virginia Fields delivers the keynote adderss.

The topic of investment in the next Harlem is addressed by James Bason, Senior Vice President, Chief Lending Officer at Carver Federal Savings Bank; Kenneth Knuckles, President and CEO of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation; and Kimberly D. Hardy, Deputy Commissioner of Community Partnerships at the City of New York Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Real estate development the next Harlem is discussed by Ghislaine Hermanuz, urban designer and professor of Architecture at City University of New York; Carlton Brown, Chief Operating Officer at Full Spectrum, LLC, responsible for the development of 1400 Fifth Avenue; Lewis Futterman, co-founder, Uptown Partners, LLC, reponsible for the development of The Lenox Condominum; and Elizabeth Colon, Executive Director, East Harlem Business Capital Corporation, responsible for the development of La Marqueta Internacional.

Development is further addressed by Maxine F. Griffith, Executive Vice President for Government and Community Affairs, Columbia University; and Derek Johnson, founder and CEO of Intergrated Urban Holdings, LLC.
A question and answer session/ panel discussion is moderated by Max Bond, Principal, Davis Brody Bond; and Karen A. Philips, Commissioner DCP City Planning Commission.
