The Baruch community welcomes the freshman class of 2007 at the Convocation ceremony.
The event begins with an introduction from James McCarthy, Provost and vice President for Academic Affairs. Also starting his first year as a faculty member in Baruch College, McMarthy states, "Join me as we get lost in finding classrooms in the Vertical Campus." He gives a historic speech about universities versus colleges.
President Waldron gives her informative speech tailored specifically about Baruch. One notworkthy rhetorical question she asks is: "What does it mean to be the most diverse college in the United States?" The Baruch College Community is just as diverse in its student body as it is in its faculty and staff. She encourages students to use the City's resources to enrich their college experiences.
Anthony Hernandez, President of Undergraduate Student Government gives an inspirational speech, giving two of the most pertinent phrases he gathered from his experienc here at Baruch: "College is what you make it" and "What would you do if you know you could not fail?"
Guest speaker Ed Cardoza, Director of Development, Partners in Health (PIH), delivers the convocation address and leads a discussion about this year's freshmen reading, Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder.
Ben Corpus, Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students formally inducts the students into matriculated status.
Teresa Parker, soprano, sings and instructs the students how to sing Baruch's Alma Mater.
The event takes place on August 23, 2007, at Mason Hall, 17 Lexington Avenue.
