“A year ago, City Council member Melissa Mark-Viverito was instrumental in helping to bring participatory budgeting to New York City, engaging her district and giving them say in the political process by allocating a percentage of the council member’s discretionary funds for capital projects of their choosing. In 2011, Mark-Viverito was one of four members, along with Jumaane Williams, Eric Ulrich, and Brad Lander, to introduce the process in their districts.” This seminar, therefore, presents a broad perspective on participatory budgeting in government and describes specifically the pilot process in four New York City Council Districts. Moderated by Daniel W. Williams, Associate Professor at Baruch College of the School of Public Affairs, the program includes panelists Donata Secondo, Project Coordinator of Participatory Budgeting Project, Melissa Mark-Viverito, New York City Council Member of 8th District in Manhattan and Hazel Martinez, Member of the District Committee in New York City Council District 45 and of the Citywide Steering Committee for Participatory Budgeting.
